Baby Names from the Birds

Sometimes picking out your baby’s name feels like it’s “for the birds” as the saying goes. Ok not really, but it can get frustrating and hard. But you know where you can find some great names? Nature and the animal kingdom. We thought about that phrase, for the birds, and also the birds and the bees! Next thing you know…I’m writing a list of baby names inspired by birds! After all, they are delivered by storks right?

So, let your heart take flight as you imagine your precious baby with a wonderful name!

Boys

Bishop You might have heard this boy’s name, not based off birds. But there are several birds by the name of Bishop, and we happen to like it a lot. The birds are bright and beautiful. The males are known as weavers for the nests they build, and they live in tight knit communities. Sounds like a good thing to me!

Finch A rare but not unheard of name for boys. There many finch birds usually small and colorful. They are a popular pet bird. Honestly though, the name makes me think of Atticus Finch from To Kill a Mockingbird, and he was a great guy. It’s a short punchy name and I think your boy would grow to love it.

Brant Brant has been known to mean “sword” and has been out of style as of late. But we think it’s such a strong name and the bird is impressive. A Brant is a small goose that lives along the ocean shore and breeds in the high Arctic tundra! Now that is a tough bird.

Gannet Gannets are large and impressive sea birds. The names not common, yet, but we think it should be. They are known for their spectacular plunge dives into the sea for fish. So if you want your boy to wow everyone with his abilities, Gannet is a great name!

Cooper This name is heard here and there, as a name it originates from the surname used for people who made barrels. But in this instance, we’re thinking of the Coopers Hawk. This predatory bird is often found prowling above the end of the forest. They are able to glide gracefully with just a few wing beats. Cooper brings to mind a boy who can be both fierce and graceful.

Jay This name is relatively common, but it actually originates from the jaybird. There are many different kinds of jaybirds all colorful and noisy! But we love the sounds they make. So if your little one comes out cooing and hollering, maybe Jay is a good name for him too!

Girls

Dove Pretty as a dove. These birds have always been associated with love, peace and beauty. What better name for your little girl? It may seem new and trendy but Dove has been used as a first name since at least the 17th century. It’s also not unheard of for boys.

Kestrel This pretty girls name has been used off and on for some time. The bird is North America’s smallest falcon, but still a bird of prey. The name Kestrelcomes from a word that means “rattle” because that is what their cry sounds like. This powerful but small and graceful bird is a good namesake.

Meadowlark This name may seem a little out there but we think it sounds pretty and peaceful. The Meadowlark is a beautiful songbird with a flute like melody that cheers you up instantly. They are hard to find but often heard and enjoyed. Your little Meadowlark could help cheer up the whole family.

Raven This name is somewhat trendy, but we like it either way. It was often used as a mysterious and mystical sort of name, and the bird is revered by many cultures. However, with the new X-men movies and Raven (aka Mystique) becoming popular the name is getting a sort of superhero rep. The bird itself is awesome, both intriguing and intimidating. This is a great name for girl with many layers.

Robin This is typically used for girls nowadays but previously was more often boys. These birds mean spring to many of us in the US. They come at the end of winter and give us hope for warm days to come. They are the proverbial “early bird” and have a very cheerful song. Perhaps this is a good name if your little girl comes earlier than expected or right at the end of winter.

Wren A new favorite name for girls. The birds are small, fast moving and flexible. They’ve adapted to humans well. They have something of a rolling song and will make their nests about anywhere. We think the name sounds perfect for a girl. It gives us the impression of a girl that can be adaptable and thrive in whatever surroundings she has.
