Most of Burkinab last names were created during the colonial period, when the French imposed a system of naming on the people of Burkina Faso. This system was based on the European concept of a surname, which is a family name passed down from one generation to the next. Under this system, each person was given a first name, followed by a patronymic (or father's name), and then a surname.

For example, if someone's father's name was Koffi and his/her first name was Ama, the full name would be Ama Koffi N'Dour. In some cases, people also had additional names that were used for identification purposes, such as clan names or nicknames.

The use of surnames became widespread in Burkina Faso during the 20th century. This was partly due to the increasing number of people who were able to read and write, as well as the growing importance of having an official identity document.

Today, most Burkinab people have a surname, and many also have multiple names. There are a wide variety of Burkinab surnames, reflecting the diverse cultures and languages of the country. Some common surnames include Kouyate (from the Mande language), Sawadogo (from the Mossi language), Diallo (from the Fulfulde language), and Traore (from the Bambara language).
