In modern Greece, Greek baby names are generally consisting of a given name i.e. the first name, a patronymic name, and a family name.
Until the late 18th century, almost all Greek baby names were named after Orthodox saints from the Old and New Testaments and early Christian tradition. Boys name usually end in -ας, -ης, and -ος and girls name almost always end in -α and -η, though a few ends in -ώ with -ου. The Greek baby names are not just labelling to differentiate one child from another, but these are more like a tradition that passed down from one generation to another. In Greek tradition, the first-born son is named after paternal grandfather, and first-born daughter is named after her paternal grandmother. The last name i.e. the family name is mostly patronymic, but it may also be based on occupation, personal characteristics, or location. In official documents, it is required that the father's name must be inserted between a person's first and last name.
