Midsummer Baby Names

The days are officially getting shorter, but summer is nowhere near over! We’re still in love with the sun, the BBQs and all the celebrations summer has to offer. And for babies born in this magical time of the year, why not memorialize the sunny season with one of these Midsummer names?

Solstice Solstice works for both summer and winter babies, representing as it does the longest day of the year (June 21) and the shortest (December 21). The solstice was – and in some parts of the world, still is – a hugely significant and meaningful event for many ancient cultures. It’s a name which was been recorded in the US since 2012, but is still very much an extremely individual choice. It has generally been used as a girl’s name so far but we really don’t see why it couldn’t be a super chic and completely original boy’s name too!

Lysander This unique and funky alternative to the popular Alexander means ‘liberator’ in Greek. The original Lysander was an ancient Spartan general, but the name got a new lease of life when William Shakespeare gave if to one of his central characters in Midsummer Night’s Dream. Thanks to sounding so similar to the common Alexander and Xander, it won’t present too many difficulties in terms of pronunciation or spelling.

Helena Pronounced either hel-AY-na or hel-en-ah, this lyrical variant of the slightly dour Helen means ‘bright, shining light’, perfect for your little girl born on a sunny summer day! Thanks to its original namesake, Helen of Troy, the name will always be associated with beauty and queenliness. In Midsummer Night’s Dream, Helena is an honest, faithful and lovelorn young girl.

Oberon If Lysander or Helena aren’t unusual or unique enough for you, there are plenty more adventurous character’s to choose from Shakespeare’s play. Oberon was king of the fairies and a complete trouble maker, but this strong, Germanic sounding name has a lot of potential. It means ‘noble, bearlike’, and definitely has a very booming, masculine feel. However, the slightly softer and more feminine variant, Auberon, could be used as a unisex name and a unique alternative to Audrey or Aubrey. Other Midsummer Night’s Dream character names include Electra, Phoebe, and the very boisterous: Puck!

Ravi A Hindi name and a Hindu sun god, this name is perfect for bringing some sunlight into your life. It has a playful sound, but is more than substantive enough to hold its own as a multi-cultural and meaningful name here in the US. Another name for Ravi is Surya, but we think this could sound a little too feminine to western ears. For a very pretty girl’s name, modify it slightly to Suria.

Samson Another sunny name, Samson has a lot of substance and power. The name of this Old Testament champion against Goliath literally means ‘sun’ in Biblical Hebrew. Also, given its structure, it could be a really fresh and cool way of remembering a Sam in the family.

Abner Abneris a Biblical name which hasn’t gotten much attention at all from American parents in the last century or so. We think it’s time to change that! It sounds a lot less grand and stuffy than Abraham, and has a lovely softness to it that is often missing from Biblical boy’s names. It means ‘father of light’, and its inherent nobility shines through it.

Solana This Spanish name meaning ‘sunshine’ is bright, cheerful and completely enticing. Both it and its silvery, lunar sister, Selena, have huge cross-cultural appeal, with Solana having the added advantage of being still relatively quite rare and newly fashionable.

Dag A Scandinavian boy’s name, Dag could be a little abrupt for American parents. It definitely has a certain charm, though, and we currently are in love with all names with a Viking-chic vibe. It means ‘daylight’, and is related to the German Dagobert, which means ‘bright day’.

Barnaby Finally, we think the surname of the iconic detective from Britain’s Midsomer Murders deserves a mention. It sounds extremely friendly and playful, and is the English variant of the Aramaic Barnabas. It literally means ‘son of consolation’, but we think it is a very bright and brilliant name for any sunny little boy.
