Everybody's little girl or boy is their princess or prince. But you know: yours is so much more! Here are our 10 favorite names for your future cuddle kings and queens:

Zadie So sweet and so fashionable! This exotic little name literally means 'princess', so it's perfect for your literal princess! By far the more popular variant – ranked #52 in the lists – is Sadie, which is just as pleasantly sassy and pleasing to the ear, but we definitely prefer the striking initial 'Z' in Zadie.

Brendan Meaning 'prince', this is one of many Irish names which seem to have taken over in the US! We like it as a possible alternative to the more popular name Brandon. An important figure in Irish mythology, St Brendan also has a strong connection to America. According to legend, he was the first European to sail to America, at one point even being helped along on his journey by a whale!

Zara Not only does this Arabic name mean princess, it is also the name of a princess! When the Queen's granddaughter was given this exotic sounding name, interest in it grew exponentially and it gave it an instant aristocratic stamp of approval! Its popularity here is also increasing and looks set to break into the top 400 very soon. Although not related directly to the name Sarah, some prospective parents see Zara as a trendy alternative.

Malik A strong, masculine sounding name, derived from the Arabic for 'king'. Its popularity has remained steady over the last number of decades, hovering around the #380 mark. It's been in direct competition in recent years with the similar sounding Malachi. The Hebrew name meaning 'my messenger' has proved considerably more popular with new parents. Malika for girls is still a rarity in the US, but is on the rise.

Sarah A biblical name steeped in history and cultural significance, this name has never gone out of style. One of the primary stories associated with Sarah is that of her infertility and subsequent miraculous birth. If you've had a particularly difficult road to meeting your little princess, this might be a suitable name to include. And if you love the name but want something slightly less traditional, consider Sera. Short and sweet while a touch of the unusual, it maintains all of the original's meaning and significance.

Eric The archetypical name for a Viking warrior, this Scandinavian name means 'eternal ruler'. It's currently more popular than ever before as people have become much more interested in Viking history and modern Scandinavian TV! For an even more ancient looking twist, use the Germanic spelling of Erik.

Orla An Irish name meaning 'golden princess', this name hasn't enjoyed the same level of celebrity as other Irish names. We think it's high time this changes! Not only is the name pleasing to the eye but it positively rolls off the tongue. It will provide little to no pronunciation or spelling problems for the average American, though the Gaelic original, Orfhlaith, is definitely a tongue twister!!

Rex Not a prince, but a 'king'! We positively love names ending in –x, and Rex is a much less prevalent alternative to the ever popular Max. Although a definitively Latin name, it has a slightly cowboy-ish ring to it. We can definitely see a Rex running about the garden, in his castle, having adventures!

Maelie A really unique name from the French region of Brittany, it – of course! – means 'princess'. Pronounced May-lee or to sound like the better known Miley , this might be a really good option if there are any Marys, Maes or Margarets in your family who you want to commemorate and honor in your child's name, while still bestowing something on her that is completely her own.

Prince Finally, if you can't decide on a princely enough name for your little prince, then why not Prince itself! It might surprise many to know just how popular a name this is, having found itself in the top 400 for much of the last decade. Music lovers might be particularly drawn to this name and we certainly expect to see a large number of Prince and Bowies in next year's list. Be mindful about what surname follows your Prince though, as this can really make all the difference as to whether it's a success or not!
