Korea is a country having rich and complex history with a diverse heritage. Like its culture and heritage, even Korean baby names are unique which is not just a term of address, but also hold magical meaning.

Generally, Korean people follow two types of naming tradition: one is to follow the given family generation name and the other one is to give a unique name regardless of tradition. Park, Lee, and Kim are the three common surnames in Korea which is used by over half of the population. A Korean baby name consists of a family name, followed by a given name. The Korean given name is based on Hangul, an alphabetical script and Hanja, a logo-syllabic characters. Hanja are the Chinese characters while Hangul are Korean native alphabets. Earlier Korean parents used to select their baby names from the list of approved names issued by the government. But now parents are choosing their baby names derived from traditional Korean words. Korean girls are generally given two-syllable names.
