How do you know that a name is popular? This is a difficult question to answer because various sites provide their lists of popular first names, some of which differ from the others. The best approach to sample popular first names is by looking up names that make repeated appearance in the top baby naming sites. While at it, critical analysis is necessary since the sites usually provide varying order of popular names in their lists. I took the liberty of doing research into several prominent sites to sample for you the list of the ten most popular first names for baby boys in America in 2018. The list may not be similar to what you may have looked up because it is an aggregate of many lists as provided by various sites.

At the top of my list is the name Liam which means strong-willed. The name has its origin among the Irish people. This name is also thought to be a short form of the name William. This name has dominated the top ten lists in the US since 2013. Some of the famous personalities that bear this name include an actor, Liam Hemsworth. I am convinced that this name is on top of the list because it appears top in most of the American naming sites. Liam is a short and cute name for a baby boy. It also exhibits class. The name may have Irish origin, but many western countries including the US have adopted it.

Noah comes in as the second most popular name. In my research, I found this name in the top three positions, mostly in the second position. In fact, it topped the lists in many naming sites. USA Today places it at number one, ahead of Liam. Noah is an old Hebrew name that means rest and comfort. The story of Noah and the Ark is that of comfort and rest for select people and animals, even as God poured his wrath on the Earth. This makes the name a good fit for parents who may have had many challenges before the baby came along. To them, the baby is a sense of new hope, rest, and comfort. Some of the famous personalities with this name include Noah While, Noah Emmerich, and Noah Baumbach, all of whom are American actors except Baumbach.

At position three is the name Oliver. Just like Noah and Liam, this name also appears in the top three spot in major sites. In fact, bounty places it at number one. The female version of Oliver is Olivia, which also holds top spots in most 2018 lists for popular names for baby girls. This name has a long history in the English, French, America, German>, and Latin cultures. It signifies beauty, dignity, and peace. In French culture, it is Olivier. The name was common in England in the medieval era. It disappeared in the 17th Century, probably because of the English military commander Oliver Cromwell who ruled the nation upon the end of the civil war. It re-emerged in the 19th Century. Some argue that the character or Oliver Twist in Charles Dickens' novel could have popularized the name.

Number four is Logan. This name is derived from the Scottish surname, Logan. It is mostly used as first name for boys but it can also be used for girls. Logan means small hollow. I did not find any significance in the meaning of this name. Why would anyone want to name his or her baby after a small hollow? Because of this vague meaning, I would not recommend this name to any mother out there unless they find their own meaning in the name that identifies with what they cherish.

Mason comes in at number five. This name has an English origin and it means one that works with stones. It has often been associated with male. However, recently, some parents have been using it for their daughters. Mason's position is confirmed by sites like the list, mom junction, baby center, and mom 365.

Lucas is the sixth most popular names for baby boys in America in 2018. This is a slight drop from the earlier position held in 2017. Lucas means illuminating. It has its origin from the Hebrew name, Luke. One of the most prominent bearers of this name is George Lucas, the brain behind Star Wars and Indiana Jones.

Number seven in this list is Ethan. The name is from the Hebrew culture and it means strong. It has maintained top ten positions in American since 2017. The biblical Ethan was a very wise person. The name Ethan> gained its popularity in the beginning of the 20th Century. It is attractive for parents whose motive is to inspire virtues in their baby boys as they grow into men of value for the society.

Reports from major naming sites put the name Elijah at position eight. Elijah is an old Hebrew name that means Yahweh is God. This meaning does not make the name religious but it rather creates an identity of a child whose parents believe in the creative power of God. Like Ethan, this name also began to rise in the American charts in early 20th Century.

Aiden is at number nine, a spot it has held since 2017. A little research would reveal that this name oscillates with James on this position. However, it appears on top of James in most of the naming sites. It has its roots from the Irish name Aodh; which was the name the Celtics gave to their god of fire and sun.

The name that closes my list of top ten is James. It is derived from the Hebrew name Ya'aqov which is also the root of the name Jacob. The members of the European royal families popularized this name. It means supplanter, in other word, the one who follows. This meaning could be related to the two disciples of Jesus who shared the name.
