Sindhi baby names

Sindhi is an ethnolinguistic, Indo-Aryan group who resides in Sindh province of Pakistan and India.

Most of the Sindhi parents from India follow a modified form of the patronymic naming system for their child, which typically end with the suffix -ani. Ani suffix is used to denote descent from a common male ancestor and is supposed to derive from the Sanskrit word 'ansh', meaning 'descended from'. The first part of the Sindhi baby’s surname is generally derived from the name or location of an ancestor. Surnames ending in 'ja' are also very common in northern Sindh. Some Sindhi parents even add the first name of their great grandfather to the suffix –ani and adopt it as a family name.
